IRS customer service leaves millions of calls unanswered

Have a question on your tax returns? Don't ask the IRS.  As tax day looms, an annual watchdog report to Congress finds that the agency is falling short when it comes to answering Americans' questions about the convoluted tax code.  The National Taxpayer Advocate found only 61 percent of people seeking to speak with a customer service representative last year got through to anybody -- leaving nearly 20 million calls unanswered.  The... Amid Egypt's uprising anniversary, US condemns violence, pledges Middle East support

The three-year anniversary of Egypt’s political uprising was marked this weekend with government-backed rallies and deadly anti-government protests, as the Obama administration vowed continued support toward stabilizing the Middle East and urged residents to move toward peace -- not violence. The contrasting scenes Saturday reflect the three years of turmoil in Egypt since the start of the Jan. 25, 2011 revolution, which ultimately... [read news]

Fox News Poll: ObamaCare support hits record low

A record high number of voters now oppose the 2010 Affordable Care Act and a record low number supports it, according to the latest Fox News poll. In addition, a majority thinks the new law will increase their health care costs, while few think it will improve their quality of care. The new poll finds 59 percent of voters oppose the health care law, up from 55 percent who opposed it six months ago (June 2013).  The increase in opposition... [read news]

Board declares NSA data sweep illegal, says program should be ended

An independent board tasked with reviewing National Security Agency surveillance called Thursday for the government to end its mass data collection program and "purge" its files, declaring the program illegal in a major challenge to President Obama.  The president did not go nearly as far when he called last week for ending government control of phone data collected from hundreds of millions of Americans. In its report, obtained by Fox... [read news]

Democrats, Republicans laud Obama’s defense of NSA spying but question his changes

Congressional leaders on Sunday said a key part of President Obama's effort to overhaul U.S. surveillance will not work and that it didn’t go far enough to protect Americans’ civil liberties. The leaders of both the House and Senate intelligence committees pushed back against the president’s assertion that the government should cede control of how Americans' phone records are stored. Obama, under pressure to calm the controversy over... [read news]

New York City swears in first Democratic mayor in 20 years

For the first time in 20 years, New York welcomed a Democrat as mayor in an inauguration that registered a sea change in the city’s politics. A pastor speaking at the ceremony for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday called New York a “plantation,” while entertainer Harry Belafonte denounced New York under Michael Bloomberg as “Dickensian,” while the outgoing mayor sat by, BuzzFeed reports. “Let the plantation called... 1.3 million to lose unemployment benefits as Obama pushes for aid extension

The nation's long-term unemployed will be cut off from federal unemployment benefits on Saturday, even as President Obama offers his support to two senators proposing to extend expiring federal jobless aid.   Republican Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island have proposed extending for three months benefits that more than 1 million Americans will lose. Obama called the two senators separately on Friday... [read news]

'Unacceptable': Lawmakers battle military retiree cuts ahead of key budget vote

America's veterans and military retirees suddenly have emerged at the center of the budget debate and could be the determining factor in whether the House-passed deal makes it through the Senate.    Despite the bill sailing out of the House last week on a strong bipartisan vote, Senate Republicans say the plan unfairly forces veterans to pick up the cost of new spending. The provision generating heated opposition from Veterans of Foreign... [read news]

Wis. governor offers a way around ObamaCare problems

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker wants to give people in his state a way around ObamaCare’s problems. He is floating a proposal that would still channel federal subsidies to Wisconsin’s poor and uninsured, but his plan would allow them to purchase coverage directly from the insurer and sidestep the on-line “exchange” created by the Affordable Care Act. His idea is getting support, even in the bitterly divided Wisconsin state house.... [read news]

Senators clash over Obama nominees

Senate Republicans, in a final protest before the holiday break against what they've called a Democratic "power grab," are staging an around-the-clock speech-spree to stall some of President Obama's nominees.  The clash started overnight after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., tried to smooth the way for votes on 11 nominees. Republicans objected, in large part out of consternation that the Democratic majority recently weakened... [read news]
