'He belongs to the ages': Obama, US leaders mourn Mandela's death

President Obama joined lawmakers and former heads of state Thursday in mourning the death of Nelson Mandela, calling him one of the "most influential, courageous and profoundly good" people to have ever lived.  "He achieved more than could be expected of any man. Today he's gone home," an emotional Obama said, in remarks from the White House.  Obama added: "He no longer belongs to us. He belongs to the ages."  Late Thursday the... [read news]

NSA reportedly collects 5 billion cell phone location records a day

The NSA collects nearly 5 billion records a day on the locations of cell phones overseas to create a huge database that stores information from hundreds of millions of devices, including those belonging to some Americans abroad, the Washington Post reported Wednesday. Documents provided to the Post by NSA leaker Edward Snowden detail how this database is able to track people worldwide and map out their relationships with others.   The... [read news]

President Obama rallies support for healthcare

US President Barack Obama is attempting to rally support for his healthcare law and stem a wave of bad publicity over his flagship domestic achievement. He was joined at the White House by Americans who said they had benefited from the Affordable Care Act. The new healthcare website, which sells medical insurance, is now working at acceptable levels after its disastrous launch, says the administration. The act aims to provide health... [read news]

Officials: ObamaCare site is better after fix deadline but no 'magic moment'

The problematic ObamaCare website has been “vastly improved” and can handle more than 800,000 users daily with an error rate of less than 1 percent, but more work needs to be done, Obama administration officials said Sunday, one day after their self-imposed deadline to fix problems. Jeff Zients, the White House official appointed to fix the problem-plagued HealthCare.gov since its disastrous rollout last month, said the site is... [read news]

ObamaCare slams smokers with sky-high premium costs, could backfire

ObamaCare may have backfired in its goal of making smoking so expensive that users quit, public health experts say, as sky-high insurance premiums force smokers to drop coverage altogether and lose smoking cessation programs along with it. "Tobacco surcharges are not proven to help tobacco users quit and there are major concerns that they will prevent people from getting health care coverage," the American Lung Association's Jennifer... California lawmakers seek to ban imitation firearms

California lawmakers are pushing to ban the manufacturer or sale of imitation firearms in the state after a Northern California sheriff's deputy shot and killed a 13-year-old boy who was carrying a BB gun last month. State and local officials announced legislation Friday that would require fake guns such as BB, pellet or airsoft guns to be translucent or brightly colored so they cannot be mistaken for real guns, the Santa Rosa Press... Filibuster Fallout: Reid maneuver could send ‘wrecking ball’ through talks on key legislation

Democrats who claimed victory -- including President Obama -- in stripping the Senate minority of its power to block nominations may have done so at the sacrifice of the president's legislative agenda.  Before Thursday, trust on Capitol Hill was frayed yet there was tentative hope following the bruising fight over the partial shutdown that Republicans and Democrats could find some spectrum of common ground for the rest of Obama's term.... Political Boomerang: Liberals switch to ObamaCare defense (sort of)

The liberal wing of the mainstream media has, for the most part, been painfully honest about the fiasco that is ObamaCare. Despite some flak for deserting the “team,” left-wing commentators haven’t sugar-coated the website disaster, the millions of policy cancellations or the broken presidential promise. But suddenly there seems to be a reassessment. I’m not saying a memo went out or anything, but just when all seems gloom and doom... [read news]

MSNBC host Martin Bashir apologizes for 'shameful' comments about Sarah Palin

Martin Bashir was forced to eat his words after slamming Sarah Palin for equating America's deficit to slavery, declaring on his MSNBC show that Palin (whom he dubbed "America's resident dunce" and a "world-class idiot") should receive a slave's punishment for the insult by having to eat feces. After blasting the former Alaska governor Friday, a humbled Bashir apologized on his show Monday — calling his words "wholly unacceptable …... [read news]
