What is Acomplia (rimonabant)?

Image:Acomplia-Formula.jpg

Acomplia (rimonabant) is an anti-obesity drug. Under development by Sanofi-Aventis, Acomplia (rimonabant) is a selective CB1 endocannabinoid receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of obesity. Both medical researchers and physicians accept Acomplia as a significant contribution to the range of treatments available to help people with weight loss and to reduce the risks of illness and disease caused by carrying excessive weight. Clinical trials have consistently demonstrated that significant weight loss and reduction in waist measurements can be achieved over time by using Acomplia. Rimonabant (Generic Acomplia) is an anorectic anti obesity drug. Rimonabant is the first drug to target factors governing the body's appetite, metabolism and energy use. Trials showed it can reduce weight by a tenth. Acomplia helps to control appetite something that for many patients involved in weight reduction programs is a major obstacle to success.

How does Acomplia (rimonabant) work?

Acomplia works by blocking endogenous cannabinoid binding to neuronal CB1 receptors. Activation of these receptors by endoegenous cannabinoids, such as anadamide, increases appetite. It is the most advanced endocannabinoid receptor antagonist in clinical development and offers a novel therapeutic approach to appetite control and weight reduction. Acomplia acts by selectively blocking CB1 receptors found in the brain and in peripheral organs important in glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism, including adipose tissue, the liver, gastrointestinal tract and muscle. Acomplia is used complementary to diet and exercise to treat obese or overweight patients who suffer from Type 2 diabetes and abnormal levels of fat in the blood. Patients with large waist ircumference (102 cm in men and 88 cm in women) will mostly benefit from taking Acomplia. Acomplia switches off the same brain circuits that make people hungry when they smoke cannabis. With Acomplia, EC system is a recently characterised physiological system that includes receptors such as the CB1 receptor and it has been shown to play an important role in regulating body weight and in controlling energy balance, as well as glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism.

What is Acomplia (rimonabant) used for?

Acomplia is used complementary to diet and exercise to treat obese or overweight patients who suffer from diabetes and abnormal levels of fat in the blood. Acomplia can also prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease. Acomplia will give most benefit to patients with large waist circumference (102 cm in men and 88 cm in women). Acomplia has been studied by sanofi-aventis as an aid to smoking cessation based on studies for up to one year in over 6,500 smokers motivated to quit smoking. A pill that helps you lose weight and quit smoking? That was amazing enough to capture headlines last week. But scientists say the experimental drug might be even more versatile, providing a new tool to help people stop abusing drugs and alcohol, too.

What were the results of Acomplia Clinical trial studies?

Approximately half of the observed improvement in HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and HbA1C (an indicator of blood sugar control) in patients who received Acomplia 20mg was beyond that expected from weight loss alone. In clinical studies, Acomplia has been shown to improve a wide array of cardiometabolic risk factors as well as promoting sustained weight loss. Rimonabant is a CB1-Rezeptor blocker. It normalizes the overactivity of the Endocannabinoid of system.

What are the side-effects of Acomplia?

Side effects in rare cases of Acomplia used in obesity were vomiting and nausea.
